The missdorothy.com
Learning Programme

The missdorothy.com programme is a sustained approach to safety education that delivers character-based learning for seven to 11-year-olds. The programme is based around the cartoon character Miss Dorothy Com – Dot Com to her friends – and helps build confidence and self esteem, encourages children to develop their own strategies for handling risk and gives them a voice to ask for help when they need it.

There are four books in the programme, one for each year, and every child receives their own copy to write and draw in. The programme is delivered by the class teacher and can be incorporated into many subjects including drama, ICT, PSHE, Citizenship and art.

Children are introduced to Dot and her friends in ‘Dot Com’s First Adventure’, which is read with the class before they start the programme.

It is important to involve the whole school and the wider community in the programme and local police officers, firefighters and football coaches support teachers in the delivery of some of the safety lessons.

Each of the four books is accompanied by comprehensive teacher’s notes that highlight the curriculum areas covered and suggest extension activities connected to the lesson. Many topics are revisited each year to consolidate and expand on the child’s knowledge.

The books cover the following subjects:
